In order
to make this thesis as relatable as possible I shall include (when available)
links to further reading on the terms discussed. (Wikipedia)
The neutrino has a resting or invariant mass near zero, so close in fact that it was assumed to be zero (as my father used to say “as close as shit is to damn”) but they won’t be found at rest very often.
I like to
call them the “ADHD Particle” because they’re hyperactive
and they can't seem to figure out who they are. You see neutrinos come in
different lepton flavors
(genders?) and they tend to transition from one to another in ways we don’t
fully understand as of yet. The proof of this
fact at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada leads to the conclusion that
neutrinos do in fact have mass.
Flavors are
not, however, important to this missive as it can be assumed that transitioning from
one flavor to another would not alter the basic nature of the neutrino i.e. they
possess invariant mass.
Now, since
neutrinos do move and when they do they prefer to move pretty close to the speed of light which
they're able to do because they have such a small invariant mass. This is all related
to General
Relativity in a general sort of way and leads us to relativistic
mass, the mass of an object in motion.
The calculation
is based on the Lorentz
factor such that the mass of an object (the set of which includes particles
if I’m not mistaken) increases exponentially as it approaches the speed of
light and since neutrinos move very close to the speed of light they experience
a near infinite (≈∞) increase in mass. It’s a good thing they start off small,
otherwise their presence would be very easy to perceive being particularly
popular particles.
This ≈∞ increase in mass is, since it started out so damn small,
relatively harmless, passing through almost all matter without incident and requiring very elaborate detectors such as SOD to study.
What has not been studied until now are the natural (relativistically speaking)
implications of this phenomenon.
The first implication is that with ≈∞
mass the neutrino would also exert ≈∞ gravity at
least in a relatively finite portion of space/time. The next natural
progression is that neutrinos at this speed would create a ≈∞ time dilation (temporal rift)
although, again, it would be present in a relatively finite portion of space/time.
If you look at the grand scheme of
things these neutrinos are so small that even with a ≈∞ increase in machismo (energy), the vast majority of
matter is not aware of their presence. Although it goes without saying that (as
far as we know) the vast majority of matter is not aware of anything at all, this
begs the question, what happens when a neutrino and cognizant matter occupy the
same space/time? Insofar as we have concrete proof, humans are pretty much alone
in this respect (Cogito
Ergo Sum)
When a neutrino passes through a human
brain it causes an effect so small that, with current technology, we can't
measure it. Neuroscience
in general examines the electrochemical processes of the brain but neutrinos,
having no charge, do not directly affect this balance. The result of this
localized time dilation is an irrational interaction that results in an anomaly
of memory which scientifically explains what is more commonly known as Déjà vu.
